The golden rule of coin collecting is simple. Do not clean your coins. You could say that is strange, huh? Cleaning them is killing them. Cleaning your coins significantly reduces the value. Dealers, collectors and experts in the field will know when a coin has been cleaned, and it won’t garner even a second look if you were trying to sell it.

Some people might think that they should give their collection a scrubbing because a few pieces don shine, or because they look kind of dirty. An old bent coin is more appealing to a collector than a shiny one. You want to retain the originality and authenticity of the coin as well as the mystique. For instance take a collection that was found buried in a bag somewhere. You can tell a story. It looks old; it’s dirty, bent or broken. You also retain the history of the coin.

This is not to say that there are no ways of cleaning your coins. There’s ways to do it, but you better leave it to the experts. If you must clean your coins, then take them to someone who is experienced. The same applies to polishing your coins. Don’t do it. The chemicals in the polish can degrade your collection, and you could end up with more things wrong than you started out with. If you found your coin broken in two, please don’t glue it back together, leave it as is. Another thing, never, ever wash your coins with water. Have you ever seen a greenish looking layer on a coin? That’s what happens when they are exposed to moisture.

Coin collecting has been a much loved hobby for boys and girls and adults alike since coins came into circulation. While historically coin hording would have been undertaken for financial gain, collecting coins as artefacts developed only later. The world’s very first coin collector, by modern standards, is believed to be the Italian poet Petrarch who, in the fourteenth century, began collecting ancient coins.

Nowadays, from rare treasures such as ancient Greek and Roman coins to currency of the Middle Ages and modern production, coin collecting sparks a fascination among historians and coin fanatics the world over. While many of the world’s finest examples of coins can only be viewed in museums, for collectors, the value of a coin can be far simpler, with trading values rising significantly between competitive collectors.

Typically, a coin’s face value is based on a number of select criteria, specifically its condition, age, rarity, significance, whether there are any errors on it and its general quality of design. For most collectors, particularly emphatic ones, rather than gather coins at random, they will seek out coins from a certain year, country, or series. Some collectors will even only look for coins with defects in them.

You can have your coin collection valued by experts in coinage, who will judge the condition of your coins on a scale radiating from poor to uncirculated, in other words in mint condition and showing no signs of circulation.

Many coinage experts would agree that the best way to begin a coin collection is to buy a coin and currency collection reference book, which will enable you to catalogue your finds cohesively. You could find that joining a coin collection club also improves your chances of finding out more, not just about your interest from like minded people, but about the best places to find and buy the specific collection themes you’re interested in.

Finding a trustworthy coin dealer from whom you can seek advice is also a good idea if you’re thinking of starting a coin collection. As an expert, your coin dealer could inform you when specific or rare coins become available to buy, or from where you might find out more about your individual interest.

For many coin enthusiasts, amassing a stack of coins is easy, but sourcing and enhancing your collection with rarities and coins of genuine interest can take a lifetime. With limited release anniversary and remembrance coins printed annually, you could collect coins for all of your days, passing on a collection worthy of a family heirloom.

In the art of collecting coins, it’s an exciting feeling to find out just how valuable your current collection actually is. For novice coin collectors, it’s quite understandable if you still are not able to ascertain the different values to be found in coins. However for veteran hobbyists, the guidelines for properly determining the true value of a coin should pose not much of a problem in understanding, as expert collectors mostly have been oriented by dealers and numismatic experts on the basics of evaluating coin collection values.

First-time coin collection hobbyists need to know that each type of coin differs, and all coin values are different depending on the coin’s rarity and the coin’s grade. If you’re not sure what the exact values are, the next best thing to do is to have an expert evaluate your coin existing collection. If you wish, you may also have a number of experts conduct an appraisal on your collection. These individuals will surely have the experience and knowledge to help beginners appraise the right values of their coin collection. It’s worth knowing that the value of your coin should be approximately what you expect to pay when you sell them. First, before you head straight for an expert appraiser, you need to gather adequate data about the types of coins that you are inclined to add to your current collection. While you could get info from a wide array of sources, such as the Internet, just ensure that you are acquiring information from reputable and knowledgeable sources. The local public library could serve as a vital information hub, where you can get good-quality data regarding coin collecting values, as well as tips on the coin grading process. Once you immerse yourself on the required amount of information for properly appraising the values of a coin collection, you will then be able to fully understand the otherwise technical information that would be given by most expert coin appraisers. The good thing is that, you may even find an expert who would be more than happy to share with you his or her knowledge, and educate you further regarding the tricks of finding out a coin collection’s value, as well as share other stuff about coin grading and coin pricing. In getting advice from expert coin value appraisers, don’t be afraid, or be hesitant, to ask questions. Apart from asking questions, you also need to fully listen to his or her advice as well, because in the world of coin collecting, your coin’s value is always constantly changing. It would also be helpful if you read more about the intricacies of coin collecting, and sharpen your skills as well on the process of coin grading and other vital aspects.

A coin collector’s life is an evolutionary process of sorts, and each day comes with it a new breadth of experience, which surely will widen your horizons and sharpen your skills. After learning all the aspects of determining coin collection values, you will find it easy determining which coin is valuable, and which ones are not. You could try honing your skills by hopping from one coin shop to another, and try appraising each coin with the help of other collectors and expert dealers.

e internet, or other professional dealers.

The coin collectors who are looking to make a lot of profit from this coin collection are known as investors… these are the people who look to find coins that are limited editions, outdated, or, rare. There are kids who do this as a hobby, and the interest that they develop early in their life gets magnified when they grow up, and they sure rock the field with their collections.

I jumped on the state quarter bandwagon and started collecting those. Well, I got a little more into it, and started collecting quarters for earlier years too. I now have quarters from the past 30 years EXCEPT for 1970, and 1975. I have not come accross these years. Is it weird and just me, or are these years rare for some reason?

First, I would like to introduce my own book “Coin Collecting Starts Here”. It is certainly the cheapest (and I truly believe, most valuable) coin collecting book available! I hope you will take the time to see the describtion of it at the end of this article.

Collecting coins is an interesting, truly educational and profitable hobby. Collecting may at times, provide a special comfort to the individual collector, as they are able to gather a collection of familiar objects, as well as build a repository of valuable assets. Successful coin collectors take a lot of time to learn everything there is to know about numismatics. Good sources of information are books, magazines, newsletters and brokers who can pass on information and news, when it happens. By using the resources a person can act fast before other collectors who want the same thing get the information first. If a person tries to collect without knowing the basics, he will never succeed in this hobby. Thats why I recommed theese books.

A number of coin collecting books are available in shops today. One of them is”Coin Collecting For Dummies”, which gives beginners a general overview of the joys and thrills of coin-collecting. This book gives readers an overview of just how relaxing and inexpensive it is to engage in the hobby of coin-collecting. It also gives first-time collectors sound advice on choosing and buying the right coins for your collection, deciding what to collect, sorting your collection, pricing and selling your coin, as well as analyzing your coin’s grades and exact values. The book opens the eyes of readers to the thousands of possibilities coin-collecting offers collectors, and provides individuals with vital information as well on aspects such as history, geography, analytical and observation skills. “Coin Collecting For Dummies” should serve as a valuable reference material for both beginners and veteran collectors.

Another book, “World of Coins and Coin Collecting” , is a book which is referred to as the ”Complete guide to contemporary numismatics that collectors and investors turn to”. As coin collecting may at times be a head-turning and confusing endeavor, this book will offer expert advice on what to do, and which mistakes to avoid. This book also delves on vital developments in the coin-collecting industry during the last quarter century, and focuses considerable attention as well on the role of public and private libraries.
