Collecting coins has been called the hobby of kings because in the early days of coin collecting kings were the only ones wealthy enough to be able to save coins as most people spent any coins they received to stay alive.

Luckily for us collecting coins, or numismatics as it formally called, is a fascinating hobby that is open to anyone today. You can literally begin as a casual collector right now with the change in your pocket or purse and grow from there as you gain more knowledge and experience.

What makes coin collecting so unique is the fact that there are so many areas to consider specializing in. Some of the possible areas of collecting include collecting coins of your country, foreign coins, paper money, antique coins and coins with minting errors.

You can even focus on specific historical periods such as coins of the 1900s or coins of the Roman Empire. The possibilities are endless and it can be somewhat difficult to decide just where to begin.

Many beginning coin collectors start collecting coins from their country as they are most well-known to them. I would advise going to your local library and taking out a couple of books on coin collecting to give you some ideas on the various types of coins available and they are graded and valued. This will also help you to make a decision on any particular types of coins you want to start collecting and give you a solid background on the history of the coins.

I can assure you that will find coins that were produced in the past that you never knew existed. For example, did you know that at one time the United States minted a twenty cent piece or a two cent piece?

A local coin club can help you grow your skills and is a great way to meet other collectors in your area. They are also a good source for local coin show information and can give you the low down on local coin dealers. The Internet is also home to some great collecting resources.

A key point to remember when first starting out in coin collecting is to control your excitement if you can. That way you will not go out and start buying coins without first gaining the proper knowledge and this can save you a lot of money in the long run.

I can tell you there were some coins I wouldn’t have bought had I been a little savvier in subjects like coin grading when I was just beginning.

The good news is coin collecting has grown so popular that there are very strict grading standards in use today to protect collectors and with the abundance of coin collecting information available it is simple to determine a coin’s value.

Many hobbies can be costly to participate in but you can start collecting coins for next to nothing and as your collecting skills develop you will have the confidence to buy or trade coins of higher value. By starting slowly you can avoid making bad purchases that could diminish your enthusiasm for one of the most satisfying and rewarding hobbies there is.

I am new to collecting coins, I came into a 1921 Peace Dollar (which I know are rare) one person said it was not worth anything because it looked like it has been polished or cleaned up, another disagrees. To me it looks like a proof. I have proof from 1956 till now so I know what they look like. Now how can you tell if it really has been cleaned or polished whatever they call it. Those peopel that agreed and disagreed were coin dealers. So they confused me.

During a vacation in Vietnam, he found this coin in a temple souvenir shop. He says its worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but cannot find anyone to appraise it for him and give him the honest worth of it. Is their some sort of coin collecting association that can give him an honest evaluation of it? I don’t know what kind it is, but it’s like some Liberty coin thing from 1894 or something. He saw the coin in his coin collecting book which says it’s worth so and so.

Coin collecting does not have a particular age. It is something that is enjoyed by most of the people who do it. It is always good to possess coins that are considered ‘rare’, and that most of them don’t even have a clue about. Most of the people, who while taking up this hobby seriously, tend to make a mistake by thinking that they can never be like one of those professional coin collectors who brags of holding the rarest coins that, has ever been in circulation. All you need to concentrate on is the goal to get that particular coin, which will certainly be a prized possession.

There is one thing that needs to be mentioned here, don’t consider the rare coin collecting to be a specialty. It is not necessary that all you coin collectors must specialize only in collecting coins that are rare, or lie in the category of limited edition. The best collections that have been in existence are the ones that were started off with no particular intention, or as a hobby. It is always precious to hold rare coins, but, the coins from other regions and nationality can pep up your collection. It is up to you to choose the various ways in which you can store your coins. There are people who prefer specializing in coins that belong to one particular era, or to coins that belong to a particular region.

Most of them have a problem getting started. Most of the beginners are still curious about the rare coins, but are very apprehensive to lay their hands on collecting the rare ones. There are a lot of options when you decide to lay your hands on the rare ones.

Most of the professionals in coin collecting, and the various dealers in the market will certainly help you to get the rarest of coins that have been. The coin collectors are not doubtful about the rarity of the coin, they know it for sure, and they will not guide you wrong, unless and until you get hooked with some crooked dealer. The next thing that you need to take into considerations is the cost. The coins are very pricey, though they will look beautiful in your collection, affording them is the problem.

The next best thing to do for getting access to these rare coins is to check the forums on the internet. Nothing escapes the internet. There are lots of information and also many coins for sale online itself. You might get to know the estimated price for a particular type of coin also. So, the internet is a brilliant place to find what you need!

Most of the coin collectors are always aware about the coins they get. They wait for the right type of coin, and when they find them, they pounce on them. Many individuals hold very rare coins at home even without knowing that they have a prized possession lying in the shelf with no one to praise its value. And, there are people who, by mistake give these currencies off to shopkeepers. So, always examine a coin before giving it off to anyone, for all you might know, you might be holding a coin that can fetch you a million dollars.

The rare coins are very hard to find, that is exactly why they are termed ‘rare’, and for all you might know, they are just a few clicks away from you, and you still have not realized it. So, keep your eyes open, and keep the collector inside you awake, always!

The fun involved in coin collecting is becoming more famous with every passing day. It is one way to generate income, apart from being the hobby for many.

The set of coins that are most sought after by all the collectors can be termed an antique coin. These are the coins that are purchased from auctions, or coin shows, and even in malls in the tourist areas with a historic background. These coins vary according to the period, and how long it has been in existence. The history and the origin also matter.

These are the following tips one might consider while purchasing antique coins:

1. The buyer must be sure that he is buying a genuine antique coin, and he is not cheated with the counterfeit coins that are being sold in markets. A thorough inspection must be conducted on the coin before one gets it.

2. The very expensive coins can be purchased later, when the collection gets bigger, in the initial stages, its always better that the collector goes for the less expensive ones.

3. The collector needs to consider every other aspect before he buys the coin. There are people who are ready to cheat you, and one needs to be extra careful when buying antique coins, because the fidelity of the coin is at stake when you are buying it from an outsider.

4. The value of the coin must always be assessed by a person who has vast knowledge in this field.

5. Always narrow down the option to a specific era, or to a specific origin. This will help your search, and make your job easier.

6. Its very important that a person needs to take utmost care to preserve the coin, in order to keep the value of the coin high. The appearance of the coin also adds on to its value. The collector must always be aware of the fact that excessive cleaning of the coin will only depreciate its value. The older, the better!

The antique coins are so much fun to collect, and it is the collector’s pride if his collection has some of the most enviable antique coins. The hobby peps up the collector’s life. And, this is one hobby, where patience will play a very big role. Keep the passion of coin collecting going, and make this one interesting thing to do.

I want to start collecting coins and I want to go get them from my bank, but I don’t know if I will have a better chance of getting older coins from 25$ box of pennies or a 50$ bag of pennies. Some people tell me that the bags on average have older coins in them. Can anyone tell me what I should get.
